Homemade Stain Remover | Club Soda
Looking to use club soda as a homemade stain remover? Do you know how to properly use club soda? I’ve been dealing with spills and stains as a professional for over 20 years. The best advice I ever got was from a little old lady that told me her secret to keeping her white carpet looking perfect for over 40 years. If I had a white carpet, it would have a stain within the first minutes of putting it down. I have two dogs, three kids and a real love for coffee so I’m telling you – some nasty stains.
How I Discovered this Homemade Stain Remover
I met this lady while I was running my home keeping service in the late 1990s. She had me come to her home to do an estimate for housecleaning, as she had decided that at the age of 84 she didn’t want to clean any more. She brought me into her beautiful entry way that was so lovely and bright, and I realized that she had a white carpet.
A WHITE CARPET IN HER ENTRY WAY! Who does that?
The interesting thing was that it was perfect. There wasn’t a spot or stain anywhere on it that I could see. I figured she must have just had it installed was finding it too difficult to keep clean. Imagine my surprise when she told me she had brought up her children and her grandchild with that carpet. It was 40 years old! I was in total disbelief.
A 40 Year Old White Carpet Holds the Secret of Club Soda
How can you have a 40 year old white carpet in your entryway look that good? Fortunately, she shared her secret with me. It was club soda. That’s right, club soda is the only thing she has ever used on the carpet to take out spots and stains. Well, if you know me, I had to go right home and try it. I had a few spots that I hadn’t gotten around to dealing with yet so I was able to give it a thorough test. And amazingly, it worked perfectly. It didn’t even leave a water ring when I used it to remove a coffee stain on my couch.
Why Does Club Soda Work on Spots and Stains So Well?
To be perfectly honest, there is no good reason. Club soda is water with dissolved carbon dioxide in it. It could be that this mixture is slightly acidic and it gently bleaches the stain out of the carpet. Whatever the reason, you should learn to grab the club soda first before using any commercial stain remover. You’ll be very surprised at how well it works. I carry a bottle of club soda in my car for those times when I spill coffee on my white shirt. (FYI this happens A LOT!) I put a spray nozzle in the club soda and keep it in the back seat for emergencies. Just spray it on the stain as soon as it happens and it will work quickly to remove the stain. *
Don’t substitute tonic water or flavored soda for club soda, as sugars and additives make the stain sticky.
BONUS: Club Soda Pre-Treatment
When it comes to per-treating a soiled carpet, club soda works great for nearly any type of pet stain. Since it’s only effective while the soda is effervescing, the treatment needs to be applied several times:
- Start by blotting the section before pouring the club soda over it.
- Once the solution has stopped fizzing, immediately blot the spot again, repeating as necessary.
- If the stain isn’t fresh, you’ll likely need to follow up with a baking soda treatment.
